What Parents Need to Know - BMSCH Experts Comment on Flu Season

It’s that time of year again – FLU SEASON!

We’ve compiled some important information about the flu and flu vaccines with the help of our pediatric immunology experts at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital.

The flu vaccine is the most important step in protecting your children from this very serious disease. This year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that all children from the ages of six months to 19 years get the flu vaccine every fall or winter. It is never too late to get a flu shot at any time during flu season, which peaks in February and lasts through April, although the earlier the better," said Patricia Whitley-Williams, MD, an expert in pediatric allergy, immunology and infectious disease at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Currently, New Jersey has made it mandatory that any child between the ages of six months and five years old who goes to school or is in day care be vaccinated.

“It is essential to remember that among children, those under the age of five remain the most at-risk for serious complications from the flu,” said Dr. Whitley Williams. “In addition, parents should immunize children as soon as possible."
