The Bristol-Myers Squibb Pediatric Rheumatology Center provides comprehensive diagnosis, education, treatment and follow-up for children with rheumatic diseases.

As a program of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, children and their families benefit from the on-site resources of an academic medical center as well as the presence on our campus of Children’s Specialized Hospital (December, 2007), the nation’s largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital.

Clinical, Scientific and Academic Goals

The Pediatric Rheumatology Center was established to meet the urgent need for an interdisciplinary, multifaceted community-based pediatric rheumatology program in New Jersey. Its objectives are to:

Diagnosis and Treatment

Rheumatic diseases in children are complex, chronic conditions with fluctuating courses that frequently go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The disorders are life threatening and poorly understood; therefore early diagnosis is essential to properly manage these children to prevent potential long-term complications affecting growth, development and quality of life.

Rheumatic diseases are diverse and frequently involve several areas of the body including joints, muscles, the spine and the skin. Some of the most common types of rheumatic disease diagnosed and treated by our professionals include:

Multidisciplinary Team

The Center’s clinical team is led by a pediatric rheumatologist who works closely with other nurses and practitioners based on specific individual patient needs. Specialties include adolescent medicine, cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, pulmonology, physicial/occupational therapy and orthopedics.
