The Pediatric General Surgery Program at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital is one of only a few full-service surgical programs in the region devoted exclusively to children’s care. Board-certified in both general surgery and pediatric surgery, our specially trained surgeons operate on children ranging from newborns through adolescents.

Common Procedures

All routine and relatively simple pediatric general surgery operations are performed in a congenial, same-day surgery setting. Parents are with their child most of the time, even in the recovery room. Some common procedures include:

Specialty Areas

Pediatric Surgical Oncology

We are part of a team consisting of pediatric oncologists, radiologists, radiotherapists, and social workers, who coordinate patient care for optimal results with careful attention to the emotional well-being of the children. The pediatric surgical oncology program provides surgery for a variety of childhood tumors.

Gastrointestinal Surgery

We offer specialized surgical treatment for acquired or congenital gastrointestinal conditions in conjunction with pediatric gastroenterologists including evaluations such as upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Pediatric Trauma Center

As part of the hospital's Level 1 Trauma Center team, we admit and treat all types of trauma patients in conjunction with the adult trauma service. We offer ambulance and helicopter service, as well as a fully-equipped pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Vascular Lesions

We offer testing, consultation and treatment for children with cutaneous, visceral and extremity lesions of vascular or lymphatic origin.

Radiology

We work with radiologists with specialty training in pediatrics to interpret imaging tests such as x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. We use the information the pediatric radiologists provide to help make a decision about your child’s surgery.

Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Some children with complex problems may require the expertise of a variety of pediatric specialists beyond those in our Pediatric General Surgery Program. For situations that require a multidisciplinary approach, BMSCH offers a wealth of expertise in every pediatric field, including radiology, anesthesiology, endocrinology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, plastic surgery and urology.

Whenever necessary, specialists from across the spectrum of care will work together to meet the needs of our young patients.
