(732) 235-7960

The Pediatric Urology Program at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital provides the area’s most advanced pediatric urological services, as well as the region’s only pediatric continence center. We are committed to providing the highest level of care for infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired urinary and genital disorders.

Using cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art diagnostic methods and sophisticated therapeutic services, our highly skilled team of experts is equipped to treat even the most complex conditions.

Comprehensive Services

Our comprehensive services include evaluation, diagnosis, medical treatment, surgery, and follow-up care for congenital and acquired urologic disorders.

The conditions we treat include, but are not limited to, the following:

In caring for children with urologic abnormalities, our ultimate goal is to restore normal anatomy, preserve optimal organ function, and allow for normal development. Our evaluation and treatment methods are both comprehensive and current. Our pediatric urologists always use the most advanced and least invasive treatment techniques possible to achieve a positive outcome for each patient.

In conjunction with our perinatal specialists, we are also able to treat urologic disorders in-utero. Prior to birth, our team can employ state-of-the-art early diagnosis and treatment methods to prevent future medical issues for children and their families.

Specialized Care for Children

Because a child's urinary tract and genitalia are very different than those of an adult, managing problems in these areas requires a different approach on the part of urologists and other care providers. Our pediatric urology specialists have the experience and focus to address pediatric urologic problems, both medically and surgically, with the skill and care necessary to obtain excellent results for our young patients.

By focusing 100 percent of our concentration on caring for children, we are able to create the optimal experience and outcomes for our patients and their families. We treat children as children – not as small adults.

Child-Centered, Family-Friendly Care

At BMSCH, every pediatric urology patient receives family-centered care from a collaborative team of experts. Families are considered an important part of that team and an essential source of emotional support and comfort for their children.

Families are kept informed and educated so they have a firm understanding of their child’s diagnosis, treatment plan, recovery process, and expected outcome. Staff and families share a bond of support and trust, as well as the goal of ensuring that each child’s recovery process is as smooth as possible and that each child has the best possible chance at experiencing a full and normal life.

Multidisciplinary Team Approach

Some children with complex urinary problems may require the expertise of a variety of pediatric specialists beyond those in our Pediatric Urology Program. For situations that require a multidisciplinary approach, BMSCH offers a wealth of expertise in every pediatric field, including radiology, anesthesiology, endocrinology, oncology, orthopedics, and neurology.

Whenever necessary, specialists from across the spectrum of care will work together to meet the needs of our young urology patients.

Innovation and Advancement

Our Pediatric Urology Program is committed to improving the health of our patients through our active involvement in clinical research studies. These efforts help us expand our understanding of urinary and genital disorders as well as our exposure to leading edge treatment techniques. We have been involved in pioneering studies that have advanced the practice of pediatric urology, and our findings have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Through our program’s investigative efforts, Dr. Joseph Barone and his staff have developed a unique level of expertise in the state-of-the-art Deflux procedure. This minimally-invasive procedure makes it possible for children to avoid open surgery, repeated catheterizations, and other often unpleasant treatments. The Pediatric Urology Program at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital has performed more Deflux procedures than the majority of facilities in the country and serves as a teaching center providing instruction to many established pediatric urologists.
