The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is home to the only academic pediatric cardiovascular program in the state of New Jersey.
A partnership between the pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery teams of The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center provides the most comprehensive cardiovascular program for the children of New Jersey.
Combining the expertise of the leaders of these programs and the resources of the two hospitals ensures the highest quality of care and attention to the complex needs of children with heart disease.
Family-Centered Care
The philosophy of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is to provide exceptional family-centered care to patients and families. The interdisciplinary team is dedicated to promoting and supporting the individual needs of each child and family in a caring and child friendly environment.
Communication and coordination are the hallmarks of the care provided by the Children's Hospital team. In every way, from interior design, to clinical programs and services, to special patient and family amenities, the Children's Hospital has been designed to provide an environment that promotes comfort and healing for both patients and their families.
Services Provided
The Children's Heart Program is a comprehensive center of excellence that coordinates all of the programs and services involved in the care of children with congenital heart disease. The continuum of care begins pre-natally, with our fetal cardiology program, and continues into young adulthood. We provide comprehensive services for complex acquired and congenital heart defects including:
Non-invasive Cardiology
The Children's Heart Program features the latest in non-invasive cardiology diagnoses and management. The services provided by the Cardiology department include echocardiography, electrophysiology, 24-hour Holter monitoring, transtelephonic cardiac rhythm monitoring, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and fetal cardiology.
Cardiac Catheterization and Intervention
Our state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab is solely dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of children with congenital heart disease. Using the latest interventional catheterization and electrophysiology techniques, children are offered a less invasive alternative to surgery, with minimal discomfort and recovery time. Adjacent to our Special Care Unit, the cardiac catheterization lab allows for the safest possible care for the children.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
Our highly trained cardiovascular team surgically manages all types of congenital and acquired cardiac defects. The dedicated surgery faculty has extensive experience in the surgical management of children with congenital heart disease and are recognized as international leaders in the field of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.
Specialized Cardiac Care
Our Special Care Unit is designed and staffed for the acute medical management of pediatric cardiac diseases, the recovery of children undergoing cardiac catheterization, and the postoperative cardiac surgical care of children.
Our family suites are equipped with every possible amenity to make our patients and their families as comfortable as possible during their recovery period. These private rooms provide sleeping accommodations allowing parents to stay at their child's bedside throughout hospitalization.
Cardiac Nursing
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital understands that nursing care is the cornerstone of exceptional patient care.
Patients of the The Children's Heart Program, are children in varying stages of recovery from diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical interventions. From admission to discharge, specially trained cardiac nurses care for these children.
During surgery or a procedure nurses update families on their child's condition and foster communication between the cardiology, surgery and intensive care team members.
Cardiac Anesthesia
Patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases, present special challenges during surgery and related procedures. The Children's Heart Program has a specially-trained team of anesthesiologists to ensure the highest level of anesthetic care for children with heart disease.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Our cutting-edge MRI capability focuses on improving pediatric surgical treatment and enables doctors to evaluate children with complex heart defects.
Our Team
The greatest strength of The Children's Heart Program is our team of highly-trained specialists. This multidisciplinary team includes cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac intensivists, cardiac anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, perfusionists, echocardigraphers, respiratory therapists and child life specialists trained in the care of children with heart disease.
Community Service
A charitable partnership with the International Rotary Club, allows for children from throughout the world to come to The Children's Heart Program to receive life-saving cardiac care not available in their own countries.
