Areas of Care

Patients at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital are placed in one of five units, based on severity of illness, treatment needs and age. In each unit, a skilled team of professionals maintains the highest standards of care 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The region's first pediatric intensive care unit, this unit has 14 beds and 6 intermediate beds to treat the most critically ill or injured patients throughout the state. Patients are cared for by fellowship-trained, board-certified pediatric intensivists, master’s prepared nurse leaders, pediatric critical care fellow, and pediatric residents.

A specially trained Pediatric Transport Team and a state-of-the-art, fully equipped mobile PICU specifically designed to care for the critically ill child or newborn, assures optimal inter-hospital transfer 24-hours-a-day from hospitals throughout the state. In-room sleeping accommodations, a unique feature in units of this kind, are available for parents.

Pediatric Emergency Department

As part of a Level 1 Trauma Center, the Pediatric Emergency Department provides patients from infancy through age 21 with care for even the most serious injuries. Specially designed to meet the needs of children and their families, the ED is staffed by pediatric emergentologists, pediatric ED nurses, pediatric technicians and a child life therapist.

Pediatric Unit

This 24-bed unit accepts and treats children as young as a few days old through age 11. Each single room provides a range of amenities including television sets, VCRs, video games and in-room sleeping accommodations for parents. Specialists in every aspect of pediatric care are available and participate, as needed, in the multidisciplinary team caring for each patient.

Adolescent Unit

To meet the unique needs of adolescents, this 14-bed unit accepts and treats patients age 12 through 21. Each single-family room provides the same range of amenities as the pediatric unit.

In addition, a teen lounge offers adolescents a place to gather and watch television, play video games, listen to music and talk. Specialists in every aspect of adolescent care are available as needed.

Hematology/Oncology Unit

This state-of-the-art 10-bed unit accepts and treats patients with blood disorders and cancer. Each room provides the same range of amenities as the pediatric and adolescent units. Specialists in the care of children are available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. In addition, the registered nurses on this unit are specially trained in pediatric cancer care and chemotherapy administration.

A separate same-day services suite, pediatric emergency room, radiology suite and rehabilitation room are specially designed to meet the needs of children and their families assuring a pediatric focus that enhances every aspect of the services provided at the hospital.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is home to one of the only academic neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in New Jersey. The state-of-the-art facility features the most up to date technology designed to treat the most critically ill newborns in the most comprehensive manner.

Many of the hospital's existing services support the NICU. As part of an academic health center, the hospital's relationship with the medical school fosters the pursuit of translational research to create a better understanding of the causes of premature labor and the development of new therapies to care for the newborn child. It also enables the unit to be staffed by a faculty of neonatologists who are recognized as leaders in their field as well as in-house neonatology fellows available 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.
